Major outcomes planned for next four years (2009-2012) include

  1. Mountain Forum’s Asia Pacific activities are continued with increased membership, managed discussion lists, organisations of e-conferences/e-discussions, increased MF initiatives in the region, publication of regional bulletin and synthesis reports, better web presence, networking, partnership building and Info and knowledge sharing support to partners and members,
  2. Information on SMD in Asia Pacific is collected, documented (in any forms viz. print, radio, TV, internet and citizen journalism), packaged (SMD country profiles), updated (updating ‘Mountains of Asia’ inventory report prepared by APMN in 1998), shared among the member countries and partners and there is web presence of them  in public domains (AP SMD Portal in Wikipedia or APMN site itself),
  3. Member countries participates at the regional conference on SMD is Asia pacific, follow-up of SUDEMAA conference (SUDEEMA+15) and their interest on SMD is renewed,
  4. Ensured active engagement of Media (media workshop and follow-up reporting activities) and Youths ( offering mentorship, internship, volunteering and exchange programmes) in SMD Advocacy and their sub-networks are created and maintained,
  5. Improved role as a knowledge facilitator with established thematic knowledge repositories and CoPs on crosscutting issues (including some already started gender, climate change, biodiversity conservation etc.) and available policy recommendations on the same using expertise of MF/APMN members (next level of e-discussion/e-conference summaries)

Major achievements (in 2007-08) include

  • Managing Mountain Forum’s Asia Pacific (Asia Pacific Mountain Network -APMN) activities that includes

o    Operating and moderating the [mf-asiapacific] and [mf-centralasia] lists, helping Mountain Forum to organise e-conferences; planning, implementing, and synthesizing the results of e-conferences; carrying out e-consultations; and establishing and operating topic and group-based discussion lists for APMN/MF and others

o    Soliciting and expanding APMN network membership; maintaining and managing the membership data base, Corresponding and liaising with APMN members and network partners

o    Maintaining and updating the APMN web page; identifying, collecting and repackaging relevant (mountain-focused) information for the APMN web page and discussion list and exploring possibilities to improve it and make it relevant, up-to-date, and user friendly

o    Preparing APMN Bulletins and other hardcopy APMN publications; interviewing experts working in SMD and transcribing for bulletin; and developing news, updates and event calendar

o    Developing linkages with ICIMOD’s Strategic Programmes and developing and implementing common work plans in the area of electronic communication and preparing to work together with the Mountain Partnership Secretariat Decentralised Hub hosted at ICIMOD to develop synergies and establish complementary activities

o    Exploring and doing follow-up opportunities to broaden the funding base of APMN, including providing services for projects and programmes, and developing relevant projects and submitting for funding; preparing and submitting reports as required to MF, the host institution, and donors; and assisting with monitoring and evaluation of APMN

  • Implemented ‘Who=Who in sustainable mountain development exercise in Asia Pacific region’ (2008), ‘Biodiversity Twinning project between Sagarmatha National Park, Nepal and Gran Paradiso National Park, Italy’ (2008), ‘communication needs assessment in Central Asia’ (2007-8) and ‘Broadband connectivity study in Nepal’ (2007)
  • Coordinated and supervised development of ‘APMN’s strategy paper for 2008-2012’, APMN funding proposal for the next phase (2009-2012 for SDC) and developed many other project specific proposals and concepts
  • Managed Mountain Forum’s Asia-Pacific Regional Election 2008 and assisted in organisation of the ICIMOD – MF/APMN Digital Photo Contest 2008 on “Mountains and People”
  • Supervised APMN consultants and interns and liaised with Mountain Forum’s Asia Pacific Board Member

 

Nov’06 – July’07         International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD)

                                        Knowledge Management Assistant (Supervisor: Mr. Sushil Pandey, Coordinator - ICT-CB)

Major achievements include

  • Assisted the Division Head and the Action Initiative Coordinators to develop proposal and ideas related to knowledge management; and senior ICIMOD staff working on policy development, PES, GIS/RS and climate change to compile literatures
  • Assisted in developing ‘ICIMOD Books-Online’ database, populated information, developed PDFs of all ICIMOD technical publications and organised them chapter and section-wise; assisted in developing ‘ICIMOD Books-Online on DVD’ for the offline users; gathered and organised related web resources; and performed other assigned tasks
  • Performed necessary tasks like graphic designing and editing, in order the maintain originality of the publication and developed standards for ICIMOD Books-Online and system charts for future use

 

Nov’05 – to date Environment Professional’s Group <http://groups.google.com/group/Environment-Professionals>

                                        Owner/Global Moderator

Major achievements include

  • Developed an independent knowledge e-network of 310 environmental professionals representing 18 countries from Asia, Europe and North America and moderated over 750 postings related to water, climate change, biodiversity, natural resource management, environmental economics and environmental advocacy
  • Envisioned, coordinated and worked as a technical moderator of the “Global e-conference on Climate Change and the Himalayan Glaciers”. Developed e-conference synthesis report and released it on 5 June 2007 (World Environment Day). The e-conference received 161 entries from 150 participants representing 26 countries of Asia, Europe, Africa and North America. ClimateHimalaya Initiative was suggested in response to the e-conference. NEPAL
  • Working as an Executive Director of the ClimateHimalaya Initiative (honorary position) since the beginning

Sept’05 – Sept’06        ICIMOD/Mountain Forum Secretariat, Kathmandu, Nepal

                                        Intern - Knowledge Management Assistant (Supervisor: Mr. Prashant Sharma, Deputy ES)

Major achievements include

  • Assisted in developing, designing and following-up on fund raising proposals on crosscutting issues
  • Was  responsible for day-to-day management and development of the Mountain Forum Online Library (MFOL), Mountain Forum Website updating and web related graphic designing
  • Evaluated over 700 organisational websites related to sustainable mountain development and  developed a list of free access periodicals, related links, references and e-conference resources, that are available online at <http://www.mtnforum.org/rs.cfm>
  • Assisted revamping the MF membership database and started to develop a photo-database
  • Worked with the Information Services team on the management of the Mountain Research and Development Journals’ 25th Anniversary Survey; and developed Mountain Timeline and identified key resources for MF use

  • Assisted Mr. Risal in coordinating among experts, researchers and journalists.

Feb’04 - Sept’05          Nepal River Conservation Trust (NRCT), Kathmandu, Nepal

                                        Project Coordinator (Supervisor: Mr. Megh Ale, President)

  • Raised funds for NRCT regular events and worked as a project head with overall responsibility of project management, coordination and mobilization of NRCT core staff and volunteers
  • Developed concept notes, proposals, reports etc. and formulated strategies
  • Organised different programs, including Bagmati River Festival (Nepal’s largest community led conservation campaign with over eighty organizational partners and 3500 participants every year), Seti River Festival and Annual River Festival, coordinated with partner organisations and invited them as a co-organizer and strengthened the NRCT network among partner organisations including IUCN, ICIMOD, Winrock International, and many others
  • Conducted Training on NRM and conservation, pollution control, solid waste management, ecotourism promotion, and
  • Represented NRCT in various events.
